Significant upgrade for electricity network in Marton

Friday, May 17, 2024
Powerco is investing in the electricity network in Marton to ensure local homes and businesses continue to have the power they need now and in the future.

The $10 million upgrade is made up of two projects. A new substation is being built on Pukepapa Road and existing power lines are being partially undergrounded from the Arahina substation on Mill Street to the new substation on Pukepapa Road in Marton.

From late May, the community will notice work on the verge of Pukepapa Road and the construction of a new building at the substation midway between Makirikiri Road and Whales Line on Pukepapa Road. Closer to town, there will also be activity at the Arahina substation to carry out the lines work.

The project is expected to be completed by June 2025.

“When completed, the upgrades ensure greater security of power supply now and into the future and will meet the demand from future growth in the region,” says Powerco General Manager Electricity Karen Frew.

The lines work will be carried out by Obertech and the switchroom work by Cassidy Construction and Downer.

“I’d like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding while this essential work takes place,” Karen Frew says.

While there are no planned outages scheduled earlier on in the project, there will be a need for some planned power outages during the project to allow people to work safely.  Notification of planned outages will come from retailers and customers can also check Powerco’s planned outages webpage closer to the time here.
