Whangamatā planned outage update

Monday, May 27, 2024

The planned power outage for customers in and around Whangamatā on Wednesday 29 May has been cancelled and is now scheduled for 12 June between 8.30am and 3.30pm (back-up date 18 June).

For those who will continue to have their electricity supplied by our battery energy storage system (BESS) in Whangamatā on the day, a 30-minute outage will be required in the morning and afternoon to connect and disconnect the BESS.

Powerco decided to cancel Wednesday’s outage in order to give affected customers a reprieve after last Thursday’s planned outage in the area went over time by about three hours.

Significant wet weather prior to Thursday’s planned outage meant access to the work site proved challenging and additional machinery was needed, leading to delays.

Powerco thanks customers for their patience and understanding.

The work is part of the installation of an 164km fibre optic cable on the Coromandel Peninsula to better control and manage the electricity network in the area.

Customers will receive advance notification from their electricity retailer (the company you pay your power bill to) of any outages affecting their property. You can also check for planned outages here closer to the time. (Please note: planned outages are only searchable approximately 10 working days prior to the outage date).
