Marton power upgrade
We’re upgrading our electricity network in Marton to increase the resilience of the network and meet the demand from the community as it grows.
The $10 million upgrade is scheduled to start in late May this year and is expected to be completed by June 2025.
The upgrade is made up of two projects. A new switchroom is being built at the Pukepapa Road substation and new cables are being undergrounded from the Arahina substation on Mill Street to the Pukepapa Road substation in Marton.
The work includes:
- Building a new switchroom at the Pukepapa Road substation.
- Installing a new 33kV underground cable from the Arahina substation on Mill Road to the substation on Pukepapa Road.
- Partially undergrounding two 11kV cables from the Arahina substation to the substation on Pukepapa Road.
The lines work will be carried out by Obertech and the switchroom work by Cassidy Construction and Downer.
The substations currently supply electricity to 7,000 customers, including those in the Bulls, Pukepapa, Arahina and Rata areas.
From late May, the community will notice work on the verge of Pukepapa Road and the construction of a new building at the substation midway between Makirikiri Road and Whales Line on Pukepapa Road.
Closer to town, people will also notice some activity near the Arahina substation on Mill Street.
What this means for you
We’ll be working hard to minimise any disruption to the surrounding community.
While no outages are planned earlier on in the project, there will be a need for some planned power outages during the project to allow our people to work safely.
You’ll receive advance notification from your electricity retailer (the company you pay your power bill to) of any outages affecting you. You can also check for planned outages here closer to the time.
