Tokoroa cable upgrade

Power to grow

The Tokoroa community now has a more reliable electricity supply and the power to grow with new underground cables being installed.

Work began in April 2020 to replace 1.6km of three-phase underground electricity cabling connected to Powerco’s Baird Rd Substation in Tokoroa. The project was fast-tracked after one phase of the existing cable – installed in the 1970s – had a number of failures.

Thanks to the Tokoroa community for their ongoing patience, the new cable was up and running by late August 2020, increasing the capacity to meet growing energy demand to 3,398 customers.

Progress on the work was slower than expected – it was initially estimated to be completed in July 2020, with the project being hampered by the rain that arrived at the start of the winter.
